The Importance of "Netiquette"
According to Dictionary.com Netiquette is defined as the rules of etiquette that apply when communicating over computer networks, especially the internet.
Network + Etiquette = Netiquette.
Over the years when I introduced the importance of implementing netiquette to my college students, many of them were alarmed to learn that there is indeed a right and wrong way to communicate over the internet. Students expressed their views on netiquette and admitted that they were guility of improperly communicating with individuals online.
With so many social networking platforms available for individuals to join and communicate through, it is important to practice netiquette now, so when one transitions into their chosen vocation positive, and acceptable netiquette behaviors are already established.
There are rules for netiquette when one texts, tweets, posts, IMs, emails and communicates through college learning management systems.
Be sure to take heed to these five tips to ensure proper netiquette practices.
1. Treat people you converse with online with respect.
Just because you might not see individuals face- to-face when corresponding online, be sure to respect individuals. Many students should be mindful of this tip because you will communicate with many professors, administrators, and peers during your academic career, it is wise to develop great netiquette practices no matter what mood or challenges you face.
2. Avoid language that can be interpreted as disrespectful, rude, or strong.
Communicate online with a neutral attitude. Although individuals cannot see your face when you are communicating online, tone is always indicator of how someone wants their message to come across, so be careful to avoid language that can be interpreted as strong, rude, or disrespectful.
3. Don't bombard individuals with numerous emails, text or online updates. Be mindful of people's time and the e-correspondence they recieve from you daily.
Have you ever received an email that states "You must send this e-mail to 100 people before 11:00 p.m. today or you will lose your job"? These types of e-mails are known as e-mail hoaxes, chain letters and urban legends. Believe it or not, not a lot of people appreciate them so stop sending them.
Also if you are working in a group or contacting a professor limit the amount of e-mail correspondence you submit daily. Be clear and precise the first time, and follow up later.
4. Know the difference between social media hashtag trends, text language, and the English language.
Many individuals spend a significant amount of time online, and when it is time to complete an assignment for a college course text language, shows up in their class work. Be mindful and proof read assignments before submission.
5. Be mindful of grammar, content, facts, punctuation and capitalization, before corresponding online.
Technology is at the tip of our fingers. One can send an e-mail, transfer funds, book airline tickets, purchase food and clothing, and contact a professor all from their smart phone. A tip for college students is to always check for grammer, content, facts, punctuation, and capitalization before sending any form of correspondence. Also be mindful of what you type online because whatever you tweet you are an author.
