College Success Tip # 63 - Stop Making Excuses!

But they all alike begin to make excuses. The first said to him, 'I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. Please have me excused.' And another said, 'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them. Please have me excused.' And another said, 'I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.'

Luke 14:18-20 ESV

Higher Education students it is vital that you don't fall into the trap of blaming others and making excuses because procrastination, fear, doubt, anxiety, insecurities and worry are knocking on your front door. Putting excuses before priorities is a major NO, NO and no matter what your goals are remember

Although Higher Education is a new challenge for many college students, it appears at times easier for one to make excuses rather than get work done towards their academic targeted goals.

I've seen it happen so many times and I've even experienced it myself where I procrastinated before obtaining my Master's Degree. I made deliberate excuses as it related to enrolling and getting started, some of my personal excuses included I was waiting for the "best time", "when my finances were in order", "when I moved", and the list went on and on.

Now for those who entertained my EXCUSES, they were credible, relatable, reasonable and understandable but in my case I was only using those excuses as a buffer for anyone who would bring up my educational goals (that I previously told them about) so they would leave me alone. I wasn't ready, I was nervous, scared and anxious about the change or the pursuit of going back to school, but I knew I was supposed to go back. I look back knowing that God never gave me a spirit of fear so those feelings were not from God and when I realized what I needed to do, within a couple of months I was in my first Graduate school course and a year from enrolling in that course I was graduating with a Masters in Education, Curriculum & Instruction.

But no one gets where they are supposed to be making excuses disrupting their targeted aims. My students go through the same anxieties, fears, doubts and challenges as it relates to not only applying for school and being accepted but when they are enrolled in classes excuses are made because of homework, time, personal matters, professional matters, car troubles, school issues and job drama. Now as I stated previously those are all relatable, credible, reasonable and understandable excuses but make sure that those "excuses" are not being used as a buffer on not addressing the real issue which is procrastination, fear or just not knowing how to complete something because you just don't understand.

It is ok to ask questions and be honest, you don' have to have a solution to things you aren't sure about. Ask God for wisdom, because he gives it to us generously without finding fault. (James 1:5) Also ask God for understanding, knowledge and guidance. It is up to the college student to make the intended aims toward their targeted goals. Making excuses to purposefully delay, discount or disengage from one's goals is not wise at all.

Yes, Higher education requires a lot of praying, thinking, late nights, early mornings, studying, reading, creating, editing, writing, rehearsing, refreshing, refocusing and reviewing. But with all that is required one can see why a college student would want to make excuses but HIGHER EDUCATION STUDENTS making excuses will not get your closer to your targeted goals, dedication, commitment and good ole' fashion hard work will.

College students Aim to stop making excuses as it relates to pursuing and working towards your academic and God-honoring goals. Excuses don't equal results, dedication, determination and diligence do.

Higher Education students hard work is required, there are no instant gratification results as it relates to obtaining a degree or any goal, hard work is key.
