College Success Tip #66 - "NETIQUETTE"

Higher Education Students it is of absolute importance that you practice proper Netiquette. Some of you reading this are probably squinting your eyebrows, saying to yourself Net....i.....What? What is that?

Some students are familiar with the practice but for those who are not, Netiquette can be identified as a form of computer mediated communication (communication through two or more electronic devices). Simply stated Netiquette is the correct or acceptable way to communicate on the internet.

Whether one is conversing via email, smartphone, social media or any other means Netiquette is the social code of network communication. The term “Netiquette” is derived from the combination of the words Network and Etiquette.

Now that you have a better understanding of Netiquette, it is important that Higher education students and professionals aim to adhere to proper Netiquette practices and techniques.

As a higher education student communicating with anyone in any capacity requires some form of etiquette whether that is in the classroom, via smart device, through submitted coursework, emails, etc. For some individuals conversing via internet can be a challenge because proper netiquette is not used, which can cause an issue between peers, professors and professionals.

When one doesn’t know how to communicate effectively via any Internet network stream problems are bound to occur instantly or down the line.

For many higher education students this is common sense but for others it is an eye opener on how one can learn how to enhance and improve their communication practices via internet correspondence and in face to face interactions.

Network Etiquette “Netiquette” should be intentionally implemented via Email, Social Media, Learning Operating Systems such as Blackboard or any supported learning management system a higher education institution uses for course work and course content. The reason Netiquette should be implemented on a Higher Education Learning Operating system is because teachers and students frequently interact with one another regarding course materials, lectures and discussion boards. If Netiquette is disregarded by either a professor or Higher education student there will most definetely be a breakdown in communication which will cause additional issues with the flow of conversation. This flow will affect a student's writing content that serves as dialouge between their peers and professor.

If a student doesn’t implement proper Netiquette techniques not only will their interactions suffer but their grades might also.

Higher Education students practicing Proper Netiquette includes:

  • Respecting individual privacy

  • Incorporating Spell check

  • Relaxing on the CAPS LOCK

  • Displaying honesty

  • Maintaining Authenticity

  • Steering Clear from Toxicity

  • Omitting SPAM

  • Remaining conservative

  • Minding the Time

  • Researching and Shopping Secure Sites

  • Utilizing Discretion

  • Minimizing the Emoticons

  • Putting Text Language in its proper place.

Your proper use of Netiquette is a direct reflection of who you are and what you represent.
